This is a work-in-progress: a hand-rendering of my RuneScape character, Kamahlia. So far I have the original sketch scanned in and a preliminary color layer added. Next comes some shading and then a LOT of smudge painting. I will be posting the final version on MyRuneEscape (link above) sometime in the [hopefully] near future.

I don't do non-cartoon people very often, but have been dabbling lately. SO there are likely a lot of technical and proportion errors here, but hey, take practice, eh? ;-)

Since I already have a large list of makeup topics to post, I decided to combine last week's with this week's instead of making the list even longer.

This is also a bit different from the norm as there is minimal digital content. The original is on 11.5"x16" cardstock, sketched with a red pencil, lined with a Sharpie, then colored with watercolors. Since the paper was too big for the scanner, I had to scan it in two pieces. Reconnecting and a little histogram adjustment were the only digital part of it this week. (Oh, and I added the signature post-scan as well.)

Been an exhausting, frustrating, demoralizing, depressing, miserable, insane, busy, oatmeal-brained, pathetic, (need I go on?) couple of months. I have missed 8 posts before this week's and I am actually planning to try to make it up. (I actually have a couple done now, but don't have time to post just yet... 3rd shifter now.)

Sorry about the absence. It REALLY was an absence of mind, a literal mental breakdown of sorts... not fully recovered, but on the way (I hope).

It's been a long time since I've done 2-point perspective, and I don't think I have ever tried it with so many curved surfaces. I know there is at least one perspective error, and another that LOOKS like an error, but it is not actually an error. Go to Back 2 the Drawing Board to see the layer breakdown and the error that is not really an error.

I was attempting an ultra-compact, slightly futuristic design. One of the key design elements was a nearly unobstructed 360/270 view. The window frames became bigger as I curved the edges and kept re-sketching over them... if I was to have vectorized it, I may have tried to thin them back down a bit. And the nice thing about designing future stuff, is that any technical issues can be attributed to "future technology." :-)

Upon closer examination after posting this, I think it looks like a strange hybrid of a VW Bug, Jeep Liberty, and an AMC Gremlin.

Female Eclectus Parrot
(Males are bright green)

Eclectus are one of the few parrots that are sexually dichromatic -that is, you can tell the male from the female easily just by looking at the colors. Most parrots show little or no visible differences. My wife hand-raised two males for an acquaintence who owns a breeding pair. The males are a brilliant green with patches of red and blue under the wings.

Digital - Paint Shop Pro X

I've had a lot of fun ideas since last Friday for this topic but absolutely no time to invest. As I took a break today and decided I better get something up here to maintain my "perfect attendance," I tried to narrow the ideas to something that could be done quickly. The more I thought about the topic, the more depressed I felt. The 80s were my high school years ('87). Big dreams. Big plans. Big hair (my now-wife, that is :-). But the big mistakes outweighed all the big dreams.

If do-overs were offered, this is a decade I'd like to have back. Perhaps I would not be in the mess I am now. Nostolgia stinks sometimes.

Looking forward to happier posts next week... if there's time. I sure wish I could get back to visiting every post like I did the for the 1st 6 months. I miss the variety of interpretations.

The very first thing that popped into my mind for "run" was the key-style lettering for RUN Magazine, which refers directly to the Commodore 64. I tried a few other concept sketches for "run", including a full schedule of running, a race to the restroom (double meaning for 'run' -probably for the best I didn't go there) and a run in a stocking. But inevitably came back to the good 'ol 64 and the command that got everything going.... though usually needing a lot of debugging. /:-P

Play, Education, Work.... there's a fine line between them at times. I've just been sitting here "playing" with I.F. on the computer and software with which I work every day (when I get the chance to DO my computer work, that is). And if that's not enough computer drawing time, I will be starting classes soon for graphic art so that I can get those all-important papers needed by prospective employers (in case this self-employment deal keeps flying south). But for now, I can justify my play-time because it helps me to hone my skills for my work.

When my kids are messing around with Paint Shop on the other computer, it looks a whole lot like they are playing. But what if, in fact, they are educating themselves on a future line of work? Perhaps they will follow pop's career path. Maybe. If not, at least they enjoy playing for now.

Guess it's time to get back to work... or play... or whatever...

Another uninspired week, mainly because I don't like the cliche images of "angels and devils." There is a real spiritual conflict going on every moment, but it is imagry like this that makes it seem all the more like foolishness.

Angels are not what we like to think -those described in scripture are actually quite intimidating, though good. And devils do not carry tridents, have pointy tails and horns, and do not rule in hell.... they are destined to be destroyed in hell along with any soul who rejects our Savior. Satan is not CEO of hell -he hates that God will, in perfect justice, destroy him and he is out to kill God's children as a last defiant, rebellious attempt at revenge.

That's why this topic bugs me: it trivializes the real life and death war for human souls.

Then God gave Christ the highest place and honored his name above all others. So at the name of Jesus everyone will bow down, those in heaven, on earth, and under the earth. And to the glory of God the Father everyone will openly agree, "Jesus Christ is Lord!"

A bit sparse on details, but I have an excuse. This is my first attempt to do anything on Photoshop. I have downloaded the trial version to get a "feel" for it and quite simply put: It's driving me nuts! I did not expect it to be THIS different from PSP... concepts are similar, but I cannot figure out how to access the various functions in PS's interface. Vectors are really confusing in this thing. But, with time and effort, I'm sure it will all start to come together.

(Of cour$e, I'm not $ure if I'll be u$ing P$ much after the 30 day$ are up anyway :-P )

Glad it is "simple." I have just enough time to get it in. I am headed out from southern Michigan to Long Beach, Mississippi to help with some repairs to a church damaged in the big storms. I don't have $$ to donate, so when the opportunity came to put in some sweat, I was glad to help in the only way I can. Looking forward to a week of help, hope, and a little restoration.

I've had such a day of getting ready and the topic was posted a bit later than normal. I didn't think I'd get anything done and posted. I will be gone until Feb. 19, so I'll miss seeing all the illos this week for the first time since I started in September. If I can I will check back another week at this week's posts. Have a great week folks!

Fat Cat

Initially I swore I was NOT going to do any feline drawings for this topic. But Monday I was playing around and decided a tribute to my sister's cat, the late Bunky, could be fun if not interesting. I planned to clean it up in full color and all, but time gets away in a hurry. So here he is. (though to be honest, I think he needs to be a bit fatter still.)

I also had a little fun with the logo/emblem on the chest:
